欧洲议会议员怒斥北京对异议人士的镇压
欧洲议会领袖议员爱德华‧麦克米兰-斯考特(Edward McMillan-Scott)在中国逮捕了一名人权律师后抨击中国不适合举办2008年奥运会。
麦克米兰-斯考特先生是代表英国 Yorkshire & Humber区保守党的欧洲议会议员，他曾于今年5月下旬访华。他说，中共当局决定以颠覆罪起诉人权律师高智晟，是当局在北京奥运会开幕前镇压改革人士动作的一部分。
今年年初，高律师曾组织抗议活动，抗议日臻广泛的公安警察残暴压制维权人士的行径。
高律师代理的民众包括在中国被禁的法轮功成员，地下教会成员，以及因当局强制拆迁而失去土地的民众。
身为欧洲议会副主席，麦克米兰-斯考特曾在中国首都北京接见异议人士和曾经被监禁的人士，并在后来通过电话和高律师有过长谈。欧议副主席说：“北京政权是凶暴残忍，任意妄为和变态偏执的。”
“高智晟是勇敢的人权活动家，他代表受中共政权迫害的无辜受害者，值得全世界尊敬。[中共当局]对高的逮捕使得北京奥运被划上巨大的问号。”
在大纪元媒体上发表的系列文章上*，高智晟赞扬麦克米兰-斯考特的坚定立场。今年八月，当高被拘留时，麦克米兰-斯考特曾经组织一个由许多律师参与的全球抗议活动。

EURO MP BLASTS BEIJING OVER CRACKDOWN ON DISSIDENTS
Leading Euro-MP Edward McMillan-Scott has slammed China as not fit to stage the 2008 Olympic Games following the arrest of a human rights lawyer.
The Yorkshire & Humber MEP, who visited China in May, claims the decision by Chinese authorities to charge Gao Zhisheng with subversion is part of a crackdown on reformers in advance of the Beijing Games.
Earlier this year, Gao organised protests over what he described as widespread police brutality against human rights activists.
His clients have included members of the banned spiritual organisation Falun Gong, members of an underground church, and those who complain they have had their land taken away by the authorities.
McMillan-Scott, a European Parliament vice-president, who met dissidents and former prisoners in the Chinese capital, and later spoke at length to Gao by telephone, said: “The Beijing regime is brutal, paranoid and arbitrary.
“Gao Zhisheng is a courageous activist who deserves the world’s respect for the stand he has taken on behalf of the regime’s innocent victims. This arrest puts a massive question mark against the Beijing Olympics.”
In a series of exchanges via *intermediaries, Gao Zhisheng praised McMillan-Scott for his stand and the MEP organised a world-wide protest by lawyers when Gao was detained in August.
