I once took a group of students to sketch on Mt. Feifeng at Chiunglin in Hsinchu County. Before we arrived, we stopped to look at the many mandarin orange groves along the way. A wooden sign by the road said: “Try them for free; they must be weighed and paid for if taken out of the orchard.” The forty- and fifty-year-old ladies with me immediately put down their sketchbooks and pencils when they saw this sign, and disappeared into the depths of the orchard.
In this painting I used a realistic style to portray mandarin orange trees. For the sake of variety, the leaves are shown from many angles and in many positions. The cuckoo is a very common local bird, and I enlarged these two so viewers can appreciate them better. ＠
