【大纪元2011年08月18日讯】之前的文章我们介绍了一些冠词的用法，如“a/an”和“the”。今天我们来介绍一下关于“the”的其他用法。在英语中定冠词“the”被用于一些地名前面，通常在复数的国家名字前，河流，海洋，山脉（一座山不包括在内）。有一个简单的助记办法，你可以记忆为“PROMS”（Plural countries, rivers, oceans, mountain chains -but NOT individual mountains，seas。“PROMS”为这些单词的第一个字母的缩写）。下面我们来按照“PROMS”的顺序来看一下这些名称。
　　
Plural countries（复数的国名）：the United States（美国）, the Philippines（菲律宾）, the Netherlands（荷兰）
　　
Rivers（河流）： the Nile River（尼罗河）, the Amazon River （亚马逊河）
　　
Oceans（洋）：the Pacific Ocean（太平洋）, the Atlantic Ocean（大西洋）, the Indian Ocean（印度洋）
　　
Mountain chains（山脉）：the Himalayas（喜马拉雅山）, the Alps（阿尔卑斯山）, the Rocky Mountains（落基山脉）
　　
Seas（海）：the Mediterranean Sea（地中海）, the Red Sea（红海）, the South China Sea（中国南海）
　　
另外，还有一些地名也需要使用定冠词“the”，比如海峡（straits）, 沙漠（deserts）,以及部分常见的建筑（towers），同样的助记办法为“DeToSt”
　　
Deserts（沙漠）：the Sahara Desert（赛哈拉沙漠）, the Mojave Desert（莫哈威沙漠）
　　
Towers（高大建筑）： the CN Tower（CN 塔）, the Eiffel Tower（艾菲尔铁塔）
　　
Straits（海峡）： the Strait of Gibraltar（直布罗陀海峡）, the Bering Strait（白令海峡）
　　
一些地理名称，如湖泊、单数的国家名称、街道、省州、海湾等不需要加定冠词“the”。请看下面具体例子。
