【大紀元2015年01月25日訊】【大紀元記者鄧斌費城報導】最近奧巴馬總統提出社區學院要實行免費教育，引起廣泛熱議。對於國際學生來說，因社區學院容易錄取而且費用低，先去社區大學然後轉到普通大學是一條不錯的途徑。但具體能轉多少學分，因大學而異。如果需要補習英語，社區學院也是一個好選擇。
社區大學簡介
社區大學或社區學院（community colleges），過去也稱作大專（junior colleges）或技術學院（technical colleges）。它們屬於公立學校，通常為兩年制，畢業生可獲得副學士學位（associate degree）。由於學生很多來自附近，而且經費來自於地方政府及州政府，因此從20世紀70年代起普遍被稱為社區學院。
除了招收普通高中畢業生外，社區大學還負責進修（沒有學分）或成人教育。由於涵蓋的內容多，許多被稱為綜合性社區大學。它們通常有六種功能：第一種是轉學教育。學生可以在兩年後轉到普通大學繼續唸書，並拿到學士學位。有的社區大學與普通大學間存在銜接協議（articulation agreements），學生畢業後自然就可進入普通大學學習。
其它五種功能分別為職業教育、補習（已經高中畢業，但有些科目需要輔導後才能上大學）、進修與成人教育、職業培訓及網上教學。根據學生的職業興趣，社區大學可以提供多個領域（商業、電子技術、醫療技術等）甚至英語的培訓。除了與職業有關之外，社區大學還是成人發展業餘愛好（比如音樂、舞蹈或藝術）的好地方。
長處與不足
與普通大學相比，社區大學的好處有：學費低廉（通常每學期不到2000美元）；時間靈活（可以很早上課或晚上上課，還可以半工半讀）；有機會嚐試有挑戰性的學科；班級小，能夠得到更多輔導；師資力量未必差（有的教授既在普通大學任教、又在社區大學教書）；可以轉成普通大學。
不足之處在於：課程少；課業輕（作業要比州立大學或私立大學少很多）；學生學習可能不很用心；校園生活不豐富等等。
