【大纪元2015年01月25日讯】【大纪元记者邓斌费城报导】最近奥巴马总统提出社区学院要实行免费教育，引起广泛热议。对于国际学生来说，因社区学院容易录取而且费用低，先去社区大学然后转到普通大学是一条不错的途径。但具体能转多少学分，因大学而异。如果需要补习英语，社区学院也是一个好选择。
社区大学简介
社区大学或社区学院（community colleges），过去也称作大专（junior colleges）或技术学院（technical colleges）。它们属于公立学校，通常为两年制，毕业生可获得副学士学位（associate degree）。由于学生很多来自附近，而且经费来自于地方政府及州政府，因此从20世纪70年代起普遍被称为社区学院。
除了招收普通高中毕业生外，社区大学还负责进修（没有学分）或成人教育。由于涵盖的内容多，许多被称为综合性社区大学。它们通常有六种功能：第一种是转学教育。学生可以在两年后转到普通大学继续念书，并拿到学士学位。有的社区大学与普通大学间存在衔接协议（articulation agreements），学生毕业后自然就可进入普通大学学习。
其它五种功能分别为职业教育、补习（已经高中毕业，但有些科目需要辅导后才能上大学）、进修与成人教育、职业培训及网上教学。根据学生的职业兴趣，社区大学可以提供多个领域（商业、电子技术、医疗技术等）甚至英语的培训。除了与职业有关之外，社区大学还是成人发展业余爱好（比如音乐、舞蹈或艺术）的好地方。
长处与不足
与普通大学相比，社区大学的好处有：学费低廉（通常每学期不到2000美元）；时间灵活（可以很早上课或晚上上课，还可以半工半读）；有机会尝试有挑战性的学科；班级小，能够得到更多辅导；师资力量未必差（有的教授既在普通大学任教、又在社区大学教书）；可以转成普通大学。
不足之处在于：课程少；课业轻（作业要比州立大学或私立大学少很多）；学生学习可能不很用心；校园生活不丰富等等。
