A deadly new flu strain has killed at least 68 people in Mexico.

In a bid to halt the virus from spreading the government has closed schools, museums and other public buildings.

Health officials have warned the virus can spread in crowded and enclosed spaces.

Commuters on Mexico’s busy subway wore masks given to them by local officials.

“I consider it dangerous; the situation must be very serious, they suspended work and classes. We are worried because they are not telling us the truth and they should tell us at once what is really happening.”

The government have also called in the army to help give out more masks.

Mexican President Felipe Calderon said the issue will be resolved.

The World Health Organisation said the virus is the same genetically as a new strain of swine flu.

At least eight people have been infected with it in the United States and more than 1,000 suspected cases have been reported in Mexico.
