韓宣子對周市說：「我真不明白，為甚麼我的馬有充足的穀物吃，但看上去卻是那麼瘦弱？」
周市回答說：「如果餵馬的人真是給牠吃得飽，牠沒有理由不肥壯。反之，如果餵馬的人光是說給牠吃得飽，而實際上並沒有這樣做，牠沒有理由不瘦弱。假如你光是坐在這裏擔憂，而不去查清這件事，你的馬是不會肥壯的。」
The Thin Horse
“I don’t understand this!” Han Xuanzi told Zhou Shi. “I feed my horse well–she has more than enough grain to eat–and yet she still looks dull and thin.”
“If your groom really gives her more than enough grain to eat,” Zhou Shi answered, “there’s no reason why she shouldn’t be sleek and fat. On the other hand, if your groom merely says he feeds her well but in fact gives her a scanty meal, there’s no reason why she shouldn’t be dull and thin. Now if you don’t start getting to the bottom of this matter soon, but sit here worrying, I’m afraid your horse will remain thin.
