Silently remembering the victims of Taiwan’s typhoon Morakot. Mourners observed 88 seconds of silence marking the 8th of August, the date the deadly typhoon hit the island’s south.

Leading the national service was Taiwan’s president, Ma Ying-jeou. He said much more needed to be done to stop such a catastrophe from happening again.

“For the work that should have been done better by the government, such as water and soil conservation, flood prevention, and bridge construction, we will conduct strict reviews for improvement.”

Typhoon Morakot killed more than 740 people. It was the worst storm to hit the country in 50 years.
莫拉克颱風造成超過七百四十人喪生。這是近五十年來襲擊台灣最嚴重的暴風。
As Taiwan begins to rebuild its infrastructure the scars of Morakot are highly visible and it could take up to three years for the reconstruction to be complete.
台灣已開始基礎建設重建的工作，同時，莫拉克颱風造成人民的傷口仍然顯著。預估完成重建工作可能要花上三年的時間。
