It’s a lazy autumn day in Sydney’s exclusive Eastern Suburbs, yet there’s still a big turnout for the last of Shen Yun’s Australian shows, which aim to revive China’s ancient culture and heritage.

Some from the audience bring up to five family members to the show, just like Liz Mackenzie – an osteopath and student of Japanese drumming.

[Liz Mackenzie, Drum Enthusiast]:
“There’s dance; there’s music; there’s the two individual singers: the baritone and the soprano…the beautiful pianist, who’s doing an incredible job. But the music, the fun – there’s humor there. The colors are incredible and the drums, of course. The drums are quite special.”

Being no stranger to Chinese culture, she says Shen Yun encompasses ethnic diversity.

[Liz Mackenzie, Drum Enthusiast]:
“Within China there are many identities…you go to all the different areas; you’ve got the different dialects, the different colors. Like you go down to the south-west country[side]…there’s all those beautiful colors there. With the influence coming down from Tibet and the Himalayas – it’s really beautiful to witness.”

It also shows how individual pieces combine to create a masterpiece.

[Liz Mackenzie, Drum Enthusiast]:
“I appreciate the focus and the fluency that goes into producing such an amazing performance. There are a lot of individuals who are shining, but nonetheless they have to perform in flow with the group, so that was very impressive.”

Mackenzie walked away with an even greater appreciation of Chinese heritage.
