President Bush is home from Beijing, after tasting a bit of the Olympics…and talking, among other things, about human rights and religious freedom with some of China’s communist leaders.

Over lunch on Sunday, Bush told Chinese Head-of-State Hu Jintao, “China will be a better place if there is more freedom of religion.”

But that’s a big “if” in the minds and hearts of millions of China’s growing underground Christian community.

In the lead-up to the Olympic opening ceremonies, Chinese officials have closed down many places of worship, harassed congregations, and arrested leaders of unregistered house churches. Christians in China are only allowed to worship at churches belonging to the so-called Three-Self Patriotic Movement. 在準備奧運開幕式的過程中，中國官員關閉了許多禮拜地點，騷擾聚會點，並且逮捕未經註冊的家庭教會的領袖。在中國的基督徒僅被允許在所謂三自愛國運動教會中做禮拜。
On the steps of the state-approved Beijing Kuanjie Protestant Christian Church Sunday morning, Bush said, “No state, man or woman should fear the influence of loving religion.” 週日早晨布什在國家批准的北京宽街清教徒教堂的階梯上說，「沒有國家、男人或女人應該害怕愛宗教的影響。」
It was a bold but careful statement for the president as he walked the delicate line between pushing for religious freedom and offending his country’s second-largest trading partner.

This was Bush’s fourth and final visit to China as U.S. president.
