台积电董事长张忠谋在演讲中经常强调终身学习的重要，并鼓励大家每天花半小时至一小时阅读英语新闻，培养阅读英文的速度和乐趣，以助于吸收国际间最新、最快的资讯。
多年来笔者一直致力于“看新闻，学英语”的推广与教学，做过数百场的演讲。问大家为什么看不懂英文报纸，绝大多数人都说：“字汇不够”。但是我却告诉听众一个出乎意料之外的答案：“不是因为你英文字汇不够，所以看不懂英语新闻；而是你没有在看英语新闻，所以你的英文字汇不够！”这是一个逆向思考！
其实借着看时事、学英语，是一个最好的英语学习方法。像现在“总统大选”是很热门的话题，那么透过这个耳熟能详的选举新闻，我们就可以学到很多字汇。
