World sends aid to earthquake-struck south Asia

A severe earthquake in Pakistan has killed thousands and left millions homeless. Donor countries have responded by sending doctors, food and tents.

标题的earthquake-struck是“受地震侵袭”的意思，struck是strike的过去分，也常说成earthquake-hit。Severe就是serious，“严重的”意思。

It’s absolute devastation. An earthquake measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale sweeping through the Pakistan northern mountains has left buildings in ruins.

devastation, 重创，是灾难新闻的五星级字眼，动词是devastate。后面的句子可以分解成三个简单句：
An earthquake has left buildings in ruins. 主要子句。
An earthquake measured 7.6 on the Richter scale.
An earthquake swept through the Pakistan northern mountains.
当这三个句子“合成”为一个句子时，后二个句子都变成了分词词组的型态，放在主词earthquake的后面，作为主词补语，也是一种插入的型态，或者说是主词的后位修饰。如此一来，不就可以省掉重复写三次An earthquake 的麻烦了吗？

“地震”在新闻记者而言，可有四种写法：earthquake, quake, temblor, tremor。这一句的主要子句是The tremor is the strongest. 是五大句型中的第二种句型S+V+SC，这是最高级的写法。后面则是接了三个分词词组，二个过去分词词组，一个现在分词词组。
【译文】:这次地震是百年来最强烈的地震，造成2万人死亡，估计有四百万人无家可归。
World leaders increase pledges of support, sending rescue teams and helicopters, while an United Nations team of 8 begin relief efforts in worst-hit areas.

while是从属连接词，引导副词子句，这个副词子句里的结构是S+V+O，动词是begin 。整句的结构则是：
主要子句（increase）+分词词组（sending）+副词子句（begin）。
【译文】:世界领袖纷纷誓言支持，派遣救难队伍与直升机队前往，同时联合国一个八人队伍在受创最严重的地区，开始救援努力。

【讲解】
coordination, 协调的意思，动词是coordinate，是很值得学的一个新闻用字。Assistance，协助，就是help, aid的意思。Shelter, 避护所，或称避难所。Logistic，形容词，一般是逻辑的，但还有一个很重要的意思：后勤的，物流也是这个字。
直升机在英语新闻上，可写作helicopter, copter, chopper。
As well as 就是and的意思。Field hospital, 野战医院。

Twelve countries are assisting quake-affected areas. 100 tonnes of tents and blankets and other emergency supplies departed for Pakistan and more aid will follow. The United Nations is urging governments to give generously to Pakistan, India and Afghanistan.

quake-affected, 受地震影响的，affect是“影响”的意思，affected 是过去分词，表示被动语态。
depart for, 前往，亦即leave for, head for。
urge, =call for, 敦促、要求。
Generous, 慷慨的。相反词“吝啬的”是stingy。
【译文】:有十二个国家正在协助受地震影响的区域。100吨的帐蓬、毛毯与其他紧急补给品，正送往巴基斯坦，并且还会有更多的援助。联合国正敦促各国政府，慷慨给予巴基斯坦、印度与阿富汗援助。
The United States has brought in eight helicopters to be used for relief efforts and has promised $50 million dollars in aid, while the European Union has pledged three million Euros ($3.6 million dollars). Amadeu Altafaj Tardio, Spokesman European Union on Development and Humanitarian Aid: “The decision has been taken, it’s operational, it will be made available within 24 hours.”

At a British warehouse in Birmingham, piles of clothes were packed to send to affected areas. Britain, which has a large Pakistani community, sent two rescue teams said it pledges a million pounds.

第二句分解开来就是：

Britain has a large Pakistani community.
Britain sent two rescue teams.
这三句写成一个句子，就成了新闻里的这个长句。第二句与第三句转换成形容词子句，置于主词之后，成为插入句的型态，进一步说明主词。
