Former Taiwan president speaks in Washington hotel
前台湾总统在华盛顿旅馆发表演说
At a speech on Wednesday, the former Taiwan president Lee Teng-hui decries political opponents in Taipei who he said would have the island state absorbed by “authoritarian” China.
【讲解】
The former Taiwan president, 前任台湾总统，也可写作The ex-Taiwan president，ex-是out的意思，就是说已经被out出去的总统，就是前总统，那么ex-wife或ex-husband就是前妻或前夫了！
decries是decry的第三人称单数，decry是公开谴责to blame publicly之意。新闻记者在表答“谴责”的讯息时，通常会用blame, blast, condemn, censure, denounce, decry, slam, slash, lash out, rap, rebuke这一组字。
之前的篇章中David老师也提过， 如果您那时记下来现在就会啦，不会也没关系，现在记下来，以后记者不论换那个字，您就都会啦！
记的时侯也有诀窍，分成四组来记：blame, blast是一组，condemn, censure, denounce, decry 作一组，slam, slash, lash out是一组，rap, rebuke是一组。
这样是否就很容记了呢？当然这已经是经过David老师整理过的嘛！一定要记下来哟，因为啊那一天新闻中没看到“谴责”，那就是“世界大同”真的实现了！
absorb 是吸收（to drink in or swallow up）、接收（take over）的意思。authoritarian这个字可以当形容词，也可以当作名词，当形容词就是“权威的、极权的”，当名词则是指“权威主义者、独裁主义者”。一般“极权”与“专制”是常常连带提到的类义字，新闻记者还会用autocratic, tyrannical, dictatorial来表示。
这一个长句主要是由二个句子用who联系起来的，Who虽然在Taipei之后，可不是代表台北，而是代表opponents的关系代名词。分解开来就是：
The former Taiwan president Lee Teng-hui decries political opponents in Taipei.
The opponents would have the island state absorbed by “authoritarian” China.

前台湾总统李登辉在周三的一次演讲中，公开谴责在台北的政治反对者，说他们会让这个岛国被“专制的”中国给并吞了。
He urges greater support among Americans for Taiwan’s continued self-reliance, democracy and freedom.
【讲解】
self-reliance, 自治，reliance是rely的名词，rely是依赖depend 的意思，这大家应该都知道。自我依赖，也就是“自治”的意思，一般记者提“自治”，还会用autonomy这个字。
【译文】:
他敦促美国人对台湾持续的自治、民主与自由，能有更大的支持。
On a trip to Washington that has drawn official protests from Beijing, Lee argued that self-governing, democratic Taiwan should be accepted into the international community and treated like a “normal country.” “We hope that our American friends will understand and accordingly support the Taiwan people’s desire to be free and to choose our own future.”

前面的介系词词组On a trip to Washington that has drawn official protests from Beijing,可以分解成下列两个简单句来理解：
Lee was on a trip to Washington.
The trip has drawn official protests from Bejing.
That是关系代名词，是代表trip，而不是Washington，这里就是代表“华盛顿之旅”。
一般同学对according to“根据”，很熟悉，但对于accordingly就比较陌生，是“依照，适宜的 ”( In agreement; suitably.)的意思 。
【译文】:
李登辉这趟华盛顿之旅已经引起来自北京的官方抗议，李先生论辩说，自治民主的台湾应该被接受进入国际社会，并且以一个“正常国家”来被对待。“我们希望我们的美国朋友将会了解、并且适当的支持台湾人民想要自由与选择自己未来的渴望。
The 82-year-old former president stepped down in 2000 after 12 years but retains much influence in Taiwan, where he is venerated by some as the father of Taiwan’s democracy and remains a leading advocate of independence from China.
【讲解】
Step down,下台。Retain, 保留，保有。Venerate, 尊崇（regard with the highest respect.）。
advocate, 动词是“呼吁”的意思，这里作名词，意思是“代言人，呼吁者”。这一句很长，如果分解成最原始的简单句来看就容易多了：
The 82-year-old former president stepped down in 2000 after 12 years.
But (Lee still) retains much influence in Taiwan.
He is venerated by some (people) as the father of Taiwan’s democracy.
Lee remains a leading advocate of independence from China.
是这四句组合成了这个新闻长句，记者用but这个对等连接词组合第一句与第二句，用where这个关系副词连结第二句与第三句，再用and这个对等连接词组合第三句与第四句。
【译文】:
这位82岁的前总统在位十二年之后，于2000年下台，但是在台湾仍保有相当的影响力，他被一些人尊称为台湾的民主之父，并且仍然是台湾从中国独立出来的主要呼吁者。
China views Taiwan as part of its territory and says the island must be reunited with the mainland, by force if necessary. It refuses to deal with the independence-leaning government of President Chen Shui-bian.
【讲解】
Lean是倾倒、倚靠（To bend over for support）.的意思，所以independence-leaning就是倾向独立之意，也可以写成pro-independence支持独立，其实记者常用的是pro-independence。
To deal with一般作“对付、处理”解释，但也有“与….作生意”的意思，在这里则作“往来”解释较好，是说中国拒绝与陈水扁政府往来。
【译文】:
中国视台湾为领土的一部分，并且说台湾必须与大陆统一，假如必要的话会使用武力。中国拒绝与有独立倾向的陈水扁总统的政府往来。
Lee was earlier feted at a reception on Capitol Hill attended by 25 members of the U.S. Congress, and met separately with Republican Rep. Henry Hyde of Illinois, chairman of the House of Representatives’ International Relations Committee, organizers said.
【讲解】
Fete, 宴请、款待之意（To entertain or honor with festivities.）不算新闻常用字。House of Representative, 众议院，Rep. 就是 Representative的缩写，众议员之意。参议院则是Senate，参议员则为senator。
这一个长句可分解成下列三个句子来理解。
Lee was earlier feted at a reception on Capitol Hill.
The reception was attended by 25 members of the U.S. Congress.
Lee met separately with Republican Rep. Henry Hyde of Illinois, chairman of the House of Representatives’ International Relations Committee.
记者将第二句的讯息以分词词组的型态与第一句结合起来，然后用对等连接词and再将第三句联结起来。
【译文】:
主办单位说，李登辉稍早在国会山庄接受宴请，有25位国会议员出席，并且个别会见共和党伊利诺州众议员亨利‧海德，他是众议院国际关系委员会的主席。
In the speech, Lee encouraged Taiwanese-Americans to “firmly object against Chinese absorption of Taiwan.”
【讲解】
Object, 反对 (To express disapproval of.), 另一个记者常用字是oppose。这里介绍一下字根字首。Ob-这个字首是against， -ject这个字根是 to throw, 所以object就是to throw against，把东西丢过去对抗，所以是“反对”的意思。
同样的，oppose这个字是由字根 –pose重复字首加上o所造出来的， –pose: to put之意，o-是against之意，所以to put against 就是“反对”的意思。
【译文】:
在演讲中，李登辉鼓励台裔美国人坚定地反对中国并吞台湾。
